2017 Brewers

Fonta Flora Brewery

Fonta Flora brewery is striving to create a totally unique North Carolina/Appalachian style of beer. By utilizing local grains provided by Riverbend Malt House and foraging the countryside for wild flora, we are taking brewing back to its agricultural roots.  Past partnerships include local bulls blood beets from Bluebird Farm of Morganton, NC, kiwis from Fox Farms, and many more. Fonta Flora Brewery integrates the soul of agriculture with the artisanship of zymurgy to create a menagerie of rustic and savory libations. With an emphasis on seasonal flora, Fonta Flora brings English tradition and Belgian inspiration to the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. Fonta Flora utilizes local artists to help conceptualize the notion that fermentation is yet another medium for creating art. This uniquely artisan approach to beer yields a sustainable product filled with culture from our very own community.

Ass Clown Brewing Company

“We believe in making a product that is NOT based off of a profit model, but uses the best local organic ingredients (when available) We also believe it is important to know what is in the beer you drink and that it is made in an environmentally responsible way. Ass Clown Brewing strives to be a "green" brewing company that uses alternative energy and finds uses for brewing waste. For example, our warehouse will have recycled items, lights, furniture and equipment. Local ingredients will also be a focus for Ass Clown Brewing Company. We grow our own hops. As our production expands we will be looking for North Carolina hop growing farms, malting farms, spices and fruits.”

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, is Highland Brewing Company. Asheville's first legal brewery rolled out its first kegs in December 1994. Built almost entirely of retrofitted dairy equipment, the original brewery in downtown Asheville could produce up to 6,500 barrels per year. At the current location, 10 minutes from downtown, they now have capacity to brew over 30,000 barrels annually, with room to grow. Highland's fresh, finely crafted ales are available in seven southeastern states. As North Carolina's only regional brewery, Highland produces an impressive array of beers, from the best-selling Gaelic to their popular winter seasonal, Cold Mountain Ale.

Legion Brewing Company was born from the ethos that sharing good beer with friends is one of life’s great pleasures.

That spirit of culture is alive in our neighborhood home here in Plaza Midwood. Legion Brewing’s goal is to be a constant uniting force of community and great beer here in Plaza Midwood and the greater Charlotte, NC area.

Rooted in tradition by not limited by it. We provide a variety of exceptional brews in a casual family friendly setting where good times, community, and new friendships are formed around sharing a great pint! With a stage for live music, outdoor beer garden, and small plate food, we know we will have something for everyone that visits us in Uptown Shelby.

“NoDa Brewing Company opened its doors to the world on October 29, 2011 and is one of Charlotte’s newest home-grown microbrewery for beer lovers in the Carolinas! This unique production brewery in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood crafts small-batch premium beers, offering something for nearly every beer drinker. The North Davidson (NoDa) neighborhood is known as the creative center of Charlotte: as a natural extension of NoDa’s artistic spirit, there isn’t a better place for a microbrewery to call home.

NoDa Brewing is a 15 barrel brewery creating the highest quality beers for local restaurants and pubs, as well as our tap room. Our beer styles will have a Northwestern feel, showcasing American Pale Ales, India Pale Ales, and Porters. Our small size gives us the flexibility to introduce many unique and artistic recipes as well as our renditions of classic varieties such as Imperial Stouts, Wit beers, and Winter Warmers. Our Head Brewer frequently traveled to Europe over the past couple years. He has been fortunate to have experienced the wonderful beers that have historically defined many current craft beer styles. As we pay homage to these great and historic beers, we’ll add an American Flair that will be embraced in the Carolinas and beyond.”

Primal Brewery was founded in 2013 and is a micro-brewery focused on the production of a variety of quality small-batch beers.

Webster’s defines the word “primal” as being essential or fundamental and from our perspective quality beer IS essential and fundamental to a good quality of life. To that end, we strive to brew beers infused with flavor and attitude seeking to satisfy the appetites of Traditionalist’s and Progressive’s alike.

Our brewery and tap house is located in Huntersville, North Carolina at 16432 Old Statesville Road just north of the Huntersville town square. For more information and to keep track of our progress please follow us on Facebook at Primal Brewery.

Founded in 1999 by Brothers Charlie and Ed Shelton, Shelton Vineyards was envisioned as a new agricultural resource for an area once dependent on tobacco farming. Located in the heart of North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley, Shelton Vineyards is 180 degrees from any winery you will find on the West Coast. The distinctive characteristics of Shelton wine come from the unique soil and climate of the Yadkin Valley. This helps give Shelton wine an inimitable taste that holds its own against any wine from any area in the world. We invite you to visit us, try our wine and see if you agree that our wine is as unique as the area we are in.

Take the goodness of garden-grown products, the warmth of small town life, the earthy ethic of rock 'n roll, a deep respect for a time-honored craft...and you have the ingredients of Mother Earth Brewing. Born in the summer of 2008, Mother Earth is the dream-child of Stephen Hill and Trent Mooring, two guys from Kinston, North Carolina, a sweet southern town in the heart of the old tobacco belt….

….From beer-drinking conversations and taste testing, brewery tours and beer festivals, their vision evolved: make a world-class product, but keep the process local. "Kinston is home to us." Both Stephen and Trent grew up going to school in the little city of under 25,000, and have centered their business careers there. As a local businessman and outdoor enthusiast, Trent shared Stephen's interest in arts, preservation of a down-home lifestyle, and community revitalization. "Like a lot of modest hometowns across the nation, Kinston is searching, trying to grow and attract new folks and new businesses without losing that neighborhood feeling that makes living here so appealing. This has always been a hub of an active farm area. We thought, wouldn't it be great to make a product that has its roots in the land?"

When it came time to christen their homegrown business, they sat down and listened to rock 'n roll. "All my vinyl albums from 1965 to the present-we went through them, listening to the great sound and writing down words and phrases that spoke to our philosophy. Finally, on an old Nitty Gritty Dirt Band album, we found Mother Earth. And we knew, that was us."

We are a company that makes beer. But, we want to be people that help a culture thrive. A culture of individuals who truly live life to the fullest and gain the greatest life experience not through television or books but through direct adventures.

HEIST BREWERY has quickly become one of Charlotte's greatest destinations for craft beer, creative cocktails, and twisted eats. A Belgian centric brewpub located in the heart of NoDa, the Heist Brewery experience begins the moment you walk through the door. We offer a modern yet rustic atmosphere, where new flavors of beer, wood-fired specialties and contemporary cuisine blend perfectly.

1988. Belgium. Boy on bike. (Ok, make that a young man of 32.) As our aspiring young homebrewer rides his mountain bike with "fat tires" through European villages famous for beer, New Belgium Brewing Company was but a glimmer in his eye. Or basement. For Jeff Lebesch would return to Fort Collins with an imagination full of recipes and a handful of ingredients ready to embark on a whole new journey.

And then there was beer. Jeff's first two basement-brewed creations? A brown dubbel with earthy undertones named Abbey and a remarkably well-balanced amber he named Fat Tire. To say the rest was history would be to overlook his wife's involvement. Kim Jordan was New Belgium's first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer, and financial planner, as well as the company's longtime CEO.

In the fall of 2015, Jordan passed the torch to New Belgium's current CEO Christine Perich.

We love beer – EVERYTHING about beer. We love to brew it… admire it… smell it and, of course, taste it. We hope you do, too.

We realize that different types suit different people. Our beers represent the styles we love, and are created using traditional brewing processes. Ghostface Brewing features up to 20 unique and tasty beers and meads at any time. We rotate our beers on a regular basis, but will always have a core selection available daily. We always try to have something malty, hoppy, dark and light on tap at all times – so that whatever your preferred style, we have something for you to enjoy.

District 9 Brewing Company is a craft microbrewery located in North Carolina with the purpose of brewing and sharing outstanding beer that unites people together. First envisioned in July 2009 over a pot of boiling wort, the founders (below) believed that every person, and beer, has a story and decided to start a brewery where both could be shared.

“Birdsong Brewing is one of Charlotte’s newest microbreweries. Birdsong was founded in 2011 with a quest for better beer and a 5 gallon soup kettle. Our vision is similar to many of our favorite craft brewing mentors who have inspired us to open our own brewery: We strive to brew flavorful, unfiltered, quality craft beers for distribution in the Charlotte, NC area.

We are located in NoDa at 26th & North Davidson and we started retail distribution and tap room sales in December 2011. Our goal is to create outstanding beer, to have a low impact on the environment, and to create personal relationships and ties to the local community.”

Premium quality beer requires premium quality ingredients. OMB therefore decided early on that it would adhere to the oldest beer purity law in the world (the world famous German "Reinheitsgebot").

This law says that there can be only four ingredients in  beer (Barley or wheat malt, hops, yeast and pure water).  We do not and will never cheapen our beer with inferior ingredients like corn or rice that lower the cost but ruin the flavor, head and body of the beer.

From www.bigbossbrewing.com : “At Big Boss, we brew real beer. Beer for people who appreciated the fact that while different styles of beer taste, well, different, a well-made beer always satisfies. Big boss is designed to be appreciated, but crafted to be enjoyed. It’s a beer drinker’s “house brand” – always satisfying. Enjoy a pint when you’re out, and keep a few in the fridge. Better yet, become a “Friend of the Boss” by joining out email list or visiting us at our brewery and taproom in Raleigh, North Carolina.”

Free Range Brewing, a brewpub currently in its final planning stage, will blend farmhouse tradition, modern sustainability and an industrial flair to create an experience unlike any other in Charlotte. With a passion for creating curiously good beers,

Free Range will offer artisan brews that pair harmoniously with its farm-to-table fare. Free Range will offer an intimate and intriguing dining space that merges with the brewery itself for a uniquely urban-farmstead feel. Beer-lovers will also be able to enjoy Free Range draughts at select area bottle-shops, bars and beer-centric establishments. The brewpub will take full advantage of the culinary and cultural resources from the region to create a product and experience that is distinctly homegrown.

Cabarrus Brewing Co.

"At CBC, we believe locally produced craft beer can bring people from all walks of life and backgrounds together, and help strengthen the community. We feel beer is a social beverage and our tap room is the perfect gathering place for people to sit together and get to know one another. As a beer drinker who enjoys the social aspect of beer, as well as, many different types of beer, it’s my goal to produce quality beers that are true to style and can be enjoyed over a long period of time.” - Cabarrus Brewing Co. Brewmaster Jason McKnight

Blue Blaze Brewing

What’s in a name? Paint stripes — called blazes — of different colors are used on the Appalachian Trail to serve as waypoints and indicate points of interest. Side trails that lead to water, relaxation and camaraderie are identified by a Blue Blaze. We named our brewery after the Blue Blaze as a source of inspiration to create refreshing and original beer while honoring the communal spirit of the Appalachian Trail.

Building a new cider company from the ground up with a vision for hard cider to regain its rightful place as the #1 alcoholic beverage in America—that’s bold.

Using reclaimed materials in our new construction, giving apple pomace left after juicing to a local pig farmer, and raising money for the Rockfish Valley Foundation are some of the ways that we tread lightly.

Bold Rock can now be found in VA, MD, WV, DC, and parts of NC, SC and PA.  We partner with our wonderful distributors and great retailers to make it happen.

Sugar Creek Brewing Company is bringing Belgian-inspired beer to the Carolinas and beyond. Located at 218 South White Street in historic downtown Wake Forest, White Street Brewing Co. is an experience and destination in the town's arts and entertainment district.

According to Three Spirts’ founder Tabu Terrell, the name Three Spirits stems from his love of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and his earlier career as an M.D…

“Working swing shifts, weekends and holidays in Emergency Medicine is one thing when you have no children; it’s quite a different thing when you do. Scrooge did not see the importance of family to lifelong happiness until almost the end. My previous profession was sending me down the same path. An unexpected illness with lingering health concerns ultimately sealed the deal to run down a new road.” Terrell continues, “After years of scrimping and saving, and with the help of friends and family, we have finally accumulated enough financial backing to secure our business loan. The Three Spirits name and logo will be a constant reminder of our joyful pursuit to provide Charlotte with the best craft beer possible. We invite you to come join the new adult craft beer scene in Charlotte…Experience the fun, but grown-up atmosphere…Find a new favorite brew…And enjoy your new home away from home with us! Even if you’re feeling a little “Bah, Humbug” when you arrive, you’ll be recharged when you leave.”

Wooden Robot Bewery

Meet Dan and Josh. Their journey began as best friends in middle school, continued as they became enthusiastic homebrewers, and led them to the creation of Wooden Robot Brewery. Bringing science to the art of the brew, Head Brewer and President Dan earned his MSC in Brewing and Distilling from Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University. During his studies Dan traveled and tasted his way around Europe, developing a particular passion for Belgian farmhouse beers. With each brew, Dan and Josh strive to combine preservation and innovation to bring the best of both worlds to the South End beer drinking community.

It’s one thing to brew great beer. It’s entirely another to turn that ability into a successful and thriving business. It takes foresight, talent, and business acumen – traits abundant in the visionary leader of Foothills Brewing.

From an initial annual output of just 800 barrels in 2005, Jamie has grown Foothills into a multimillion dollar regional brewery approaching 40,000 barrels a year in production. Along the way the University of Georgia graduate has garnered numerous accolades and medals for his beers, as well as universal respect for his positive advocacy and support of the craft brewing community.
